Balancing Aesthetics and Efficiency: A Californian Bungalow Transformed
In this long-term family home, our project focused on creating a thoughtfully designed extension while preserving the iconic Californian bungalow facade. The family's vision was centred around creating open living spaces, ensuring low maintenance, and enhancing energy efficiency. This is reflected through the beautiful vision created by Mesh Design Projects. This extension comprised of three bedrooms, a study, two bathrooms, an open living area, a kitchen, dining space and a deck area.
We were deeply committed to enhancing energy efficiency and achieving high performance throughout the project.
This commitment translated into several key features, including airtight external wraps, the installation of a HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilation) system, 140mm external walls designed for enhanced insulation, the use of high performing U-PVC windows, ventilated cavity systems and a thermal bridge-free design. An integrated solar panel and battery system ensures significant cost savings while reducing the environmental footprint of the home.
Through communication and collaboration with our clients and Haydn Barling Landscapes, we also managed to retain existing trees and still have a functional work site.
Intricate joinery details by J & V Modern Cabinet were incorporated throughout the house, while blackbutt engineered flooring added timeless elegance throughout the home.
Colorbond cladding and roof were chosen for the extension, complementing the retained timber weatherboards on the front section of the house. The approach created a perfect blend of preservation and modernization, whilst establishing a comfortable and sustainable family space.
